Jennie Livingston’s 1991 Paris is Burning, is one of the all-time classics of documentary cinema. An immediate cult sensation, the film’s depiction of the underground drag ball scene in 1980s New York City put the eyes of the world on a wild and beautiful queer subculture that could have only come out of that place in that era. Another historically relevant note about Paris is Burning is that it was one of the few documentaries of its time to be released theatrically, at least in many urban centers, where it was able to reach LGBTQ audiences.
