Antoine Doinel, suddenly discharged from the army, finds a succession of odd jobs, but the most entertaining and rewarding employment is as a private detective, until love leads him astray once more.

Sixteen-year-old Antoine, now out of reform school and living on his own in Paris, works for a phonograph-record-pressing company, attends classical concerts and lectures, and falls hopelessly in love with a mature young woman.
