Austin vs. San Antonio is a new feature documentary by Noi Mahoney that details the decades long rivalry between San Antonio and Austin.

The 72-minute documentary seeks to answer the question of why Austin and San Antonio are so different, while at the same time charting where the two cities are headed in the future. The movie traces Austin and San Antonio’s rivalry to its cultural influences.

BBQ entrepreneur Aaron Franklin and former San Antonio Mayor Nelson Wolff join a cast of dozens of artists, writers, restauranteurs, public officials, and more in the documentary.

San Antonio is largely a city dominated by Mexican American/Hispanic culture. Many of the things described by interviewees in the movie (tightly knit families that stay in neighborhoods for generations, DIY creativity/spirit) are markers of Mexican American/Tejano heritage.

Austin, on the other hand, has had a steady influx of Anglo, European Americans for many decades due to the presence of the state government, the University of Texas at Austin, and more recently the tech industry, and SXSW.
