"Las Hermanas Iglesias" is a collaboration between sisters Lisa and Janelle Iglesias. Their Contemporary Project will be conceptually anchored by the biological phenomenon of microchimerism: People who have given birth host at least three unique cell populations - their own, their gestational parent's, and their child’s.
Inspired by this internal state of collectivity, the exhibition is imbued with the poetics of chimera. The sculptural installation also echoes Chimera from classical mythology, a fire-breathing female monster with the body parts of a lion, goat, and serpent.
The project will be activated and rearranged into new configurations and conversations during the exhibition’s run. Drawing on their own navigation of fertility, pregnancy, loss, birth, and new motherhood, the artists complicate narratives and normalize multitudes of experiences while advocating for reproductive self-determination.
