Formed nearly 40 years ago by Chicago innovator and one of jazz’s best-kept secrets, Kahil El’Zabar, the group has included some of improvised music’s biggest luminaries. What sets the Ensemble apart, however, is its embrace of traditional African art forms, which laid the groundwork for jazz in the first place.
