line upon line percussion presents the work of four composers, Rick Burkhardt, Jason Federmeyer, Michelle Lou, and Laura Steenberge, who all earned doctorates in The Golden State.

  • Rick Burkhardt’s Great Hymn of Thanksgiving: A table set for three where the sounds of conversation have been replaced by fragments of news reports from Iraq, scraps from the Army prayer manual, invented Arab folk tales, and a recurring State of Emergency pointing everywhere and leading nowhere.
  • Jason Federmeyer’s compressions' reflexive extractions (commission and world premiere): An incredibly detailed bit of time-carving, shaped into a wonderfully bristling textural landscape.
  • Michelle Lou’s untitled three-part construction: Cell phone vibrators, socket wrenches, cassette tape recorders, a comb + Cullen’s bass chops.
  • Laura Steenberge’s Perseus Slays the Gorgon Medusa: Clouds of talcum powder, swinging cymbals and a rendition of Mack the Knife to close.
