Karim B. Hamid: "Saturn Returns" features some paintings, but also highlights many of his collage works for the first time in years. Hamid has worked in collage for as long as he has painted. For many years, collage was a way for Hamid to begin, piecing together elements of what would become his compositions. He has come to refer to these collage pieces as something akin to a sketchbook.

The exhibition's title, Saturn Returns,” is an astrological term referring to the return of the planet to the place it was at the time of birth, approximately every 27-30 years in a person's lifetime. This period of astrological transit can last about 2-3 years on average. These 'Returns' are associated with periods of discovery, growth, and confrontation within the self. In other words, this period can represent a return to your foundational understanding of yourself for realignment, if necessary.

Hamid is literally in his second Saturn Return right now. As he ponders his own ego, his life's purpose, his place in the world, and ultimately his dreams and desires - we are able to witness and walk through his demolition yard, experiencing the pleasure and pain in this chaotic transformation or reassessment. Thus, this tearing down and rebuilding in order to experience revelation is paralleled in his aesthetic creation.

The exhibition will remain on display through January 26, 2025.
