Morgan was diagnosed with severe schizophrenia and was hospitalized from 1977 until 2000 at the Austin State Hospital, where he first painted George Washington from a dollar bill. His work can be created with a wide range of materials, including acrylics, ink, oils, pastels, canvas, paper, and cardboard.
