Just for Laughs Fest: Local comics Bryan Gutmann and Ramin Nazer get called toMontreal
Huge news for Austin comedy: local stand ups Bryan Gutmann and Ramin Nazer have been selected to appear at Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival this weekend.
The multi-city Just for Laughs Festival's Montreal arm is by far the largest. Thousands of comics and comedy nerds flock to Canada for full days of panels, performances and showcases from some of the world's best stand ups, sketch acts, scripted shows and more. In addition to headliners like Louis CK, Anthony Jeselnik, Maria Bamford, Paul F. Tompkins and Amy Schumer (and many, many more), every year, Just for Laughs selects a roster of up-and-comers to watch, a handful of character actors and stand ups on the verge of monumental popularity. Hundreds of comics audition for a spot on the list, and the names of the final few are kept top secret until just days before the show.
Both Gutmann and Nazer, it was announced yesterday, were chosen to perform in the "New Faces Unrepresented" showcase, a lineup of festival programmers' ten favorite free agents. Meaning, one fifth of the show is Austin-based. And we predict they won't stay unrepresented for long.
Gutmann and Nazer are both veterans of the Funniest Person in Austin contest; in 2007, Gutmann was crowned king, while Nazer has placed in the top three for the past two years. Nazer also hosts Live at Coldtowne, a Friday night open mic that features a booked headlining act. He's also helming Coldtowne's brand new Monday open mic, which launches August 1st at 10 pm.
