out of bounds comedy
Let our favorite Onassis videos get you excited for the sketch team’s Out ofBounds appearance
Austinites may not have as many chances to catch New York-based sketch team Onassis onstage; but chances are, if you’re a comedy fan, you’ve seen their work.
There are dozens of videos from their shows at New York’s Upright Citizens Brigade Theater online, and the group’s individual members — Alex Scordelis, Ben Rameaka, Benjamin Apple, Dawn Luebbe, Emily Altman, Frank Hejl, Jason Saenz, Jocelyn DeBoer, Lauren Conlin Adams, Mike Scollins and Rob Michael Hugel — are all immensely talented performers with a track record of creating some of the best comedy on the web.
Scordelis, for example, is a co-creator of the web series The Cat Whisperer, starring Julie Klausner; and Hugel’s acclaimed series I Hate Being Single just finished its first season. Saenz is a stand-up comic who has appeared at festivals across the country, and DeBoer frequently appears on CollegeHumor.
A house sketch team at the UCB Theater, Onassis has appeared in best-of showcases at UCB and and NY Comedy Festival, and they’ve had a particularly great past year. Last fall, they won the prestigious Friar’s Club Sketch Competition, a showcase of some of the country’s strongest acts. Earlier this year, they were finalists in the New York Television Festival’s Comedy Central Pilot competition.
You don’t have to wait until they get their own show to see them, however. Onassis will be performing in this week’s Out of Bounds Comedy Festival. Friday night, they’ll be at The Hideout along with local favorites Your Terrific Neighbors, and The Don’t We Boys from Grand Rapids, MI.
In honor of their OOB appearance, here are five of our favorite Onassis sketches to get you warmed up for their arrival:
Wonka Gives Charlie His Factory
A reluctant Charlie Bucket (30 Rock’s Sue Galloway) isn’t that into Wonka’s offer (you can see it onstage, too).
Dominos
Dad won't let some bad news ruin his jokes.
New TSA Pat-Down Procedure
Onassis' first video sketch is perfectly absurd.
I Bought A Gun
What happens when a few bored housewives buy a gun? Usually nothing good, but in this case, it earned Onassis their Friar’s Club win.
