This Sunday, over 30 of Austin’s most exciting and beloved museums unite for the 14th annual Austin Museum Day. All the museums participating are offering free admission to all, and along with some great exhibitions, the day will be filled with special activities including music, storytime, treats—and even a few scavenger hunts. We’ve rounded up our top 10 must-visit museums, so don't miss your chance to check our some of our city's best art (for free!).
Austin Children’s Museum
"Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice" is on display: explore the icy and tropical habitats of the prehistoric creatures that roamed earth 70 million years ago. The exhibit features lifelike, touchable models and interactive experiences that teach and entertain. Make sure to catch their story time, all day on the hour.
Austin Museum of Art
AMOA at Leguna Gloria celebrates museum day with an art scavenger hunt and a performance by the bubble master himself, The Bubble Chef. There will be arts and crafts and healthy treats from MamboBerry.
Blanton Museum of Art
"Storied Past: Four centuries of French Drawings" is currently being exhibited at the Blanton. In honor of Museum Day, they have created a scavenger hunt through the exhibition. The museum’s plaza will hold a Tailgate pARTy with games, music, figure drawing and an opportunity to take part in a large-scale community involved artwork.
Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum
"Texas High School Football: More Than The Game" spans decades of Texas football, from the cheerleaders and marching band to the refs and the players, with authentic memorabilia from around the state.
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
The "Women in Science" exhibit inspires young women in the pursuit of a career in science; there will be interactive exhibits and the chance to meet local women working in astronomy, biology, ecology, chemistry, engineering and mathematics.
Women and their Work
The "Red Dot Art Spree" displays over 200 artists from all over the world, and in just about every medium. There will be a game of ‘I SPY’ played throughout the day.
Elisabet Ney Museum
Photographer Steven Schwartzman’s exhibit features images taken on the grounds of Elisabet Ney’s former studio, Formosa. Enjoy the beautiful grounds and refreshing hand-squeezed lemonade.
Jourdan-Bachman Pioneer Farms
Emmy-winning Biscuit Brothers PBS will kick off this years museum day with a special concert at noon. Inside the museum, see the exhibit of historic inkwells while, outside, horse-drawn wagon rides are waiting for you to discover Texas transportation from the 1800s. There will also be nature trails, treats and live music for the whole family to enjoy.
LBJ Library & Museum
"Left to Right: Radical Movements of the 60’s" is on display, exhibiting the social and political divisions during one of the most fascinating decades. The library’s current collection will also be available for viewing. Starting at 1 pm The Eggmen, a Beatles tribute band, will play in the courtyard.
Neill-Cochran House Museum
Celebrate the day with organic goodies presented by the Boggy Creek Farm owners (who also own the the house the museum resides in, one of the oldest in Austin). They will be speaking about Austin farming in the 1800’s and their Abner Cook connection. There will be ice cream, cookies and lemonade while you gather around to hear discussions about the Civil War and reconstruction.
