Well This Is A Thing
Meet the finalists: Air Sex returns to The Highball
This Tuesday, the Air Sex World Championships return to The Highball, challenging finalists from previous battles to bring their best, most mind-blowing displays of debauchery to the stage. Based on the same premise as air guitar, and inspired by similarly dirty contests first held in Japan (and subsequently brought to Texas by Alamo founder and noted filth-lover, Tim League), Air Sex encourages performers to dream up the dirtiest sex acts imaginable—and perform them, alone, onstage.
While it may sound terrifying, it’s a great chance for entrants to test out characters (past acts include Simon the Duck Fucker, for example). Appropriately sponsored by Fleshlight (also avid supporters of solo sex) and hosted by The New Movement's Chris Trew, the show usually features a wide range of performers, from novices taking the stage as a dare to more tailored acts like Slut Truffle (be warned: clicking this link will show you video of the hottest use of chain mail and a power saw, ever).
So, who can you expect to see at Tuesday’s competition? We caught up with three crowd favorites, finalists from past rounds who have been invited back to up the ante and compete at the next level, to ask about their strategies, past rounds and what to expect this week.
Secret Admirer
Where does your name come from?
Everybody uses a stage name, and a few change it from contest to contest, but I'll always be Secret Admirer. I used the name for the first time when I was performing a routine where I was spying on someone in the shower and masturbating. It worked for that act specifically, but the name stuck with me for every time I've gone up since.
How many times have you competed?
Far too many to count, probably somewhere close to eight or nine times. One was for the Outdoor Championship at Fun Fun Fun Fest last year (which I won), plus the Texas Finals last year and the qualifier for it. But a lot of times, I've just gone up and performed, even though I had already qualified and knew I wouldn't place. It gave me opportunities to try new things and hone my skills.
What made you decide to enter?
I started by accident. The first show I ever went to was during my freshman year at UT; I read about the show and thought, "This is too crazy to not see." I went with a friend, just to watch, but then Chris Trew got on the stage and started begging more people to sign up. He was offering free drinks, movie passes, anything to get more people. So I started joking around that maybe I should sign up. Trew heard me say that and immediately cornered me. He told me I would get free passes and that I would go in the later portion, so I could see more acts and get an idea. And then I was promptly called to the stage second, after only seeing one previous act that was just bizarre. So I got up there, tried my best and did fairly well. One of the judges was a former runner-up, and he told me I had a lot of potential. So I came back, and the rest is history.
Any big plans for the Finals performance?
I'm not sure if anyone is going to reveal too much, but I always do something different. I'll just say that it's going to get messy.
Mikey DoDo
Where does your name come from?
When I originally performed I told the host that I wanted to be called Mikey DoDo, which is a name I often use on stage, but he shook his head and announced me as Weeny DoDo.
How many times have you competed?
Three or four times.
What made you decide to enter?
The first time I tried Air Sex I was a guest at Fun Fun Fun Fest. I had gotten an artist wristband and felt like hot shit, until I realized that my artist wristband was for Air Sex. I had never seen it live but I knew enough about it to know that I probably shouldn't do it. Later that night, they were getting the stage set for the show and I decided that if I'm going to get a free wristband I might as well give the audience a little somethin’ somethin’. I ended up getting second place that night, and was hooked.
Any big plans for the Finals performance?
I think all of my previous performances have been based in sort of cheap body comedy. The sight of a fat guy fucking on stage has its roots in commedia dell'arte, you know. But I think for this performance I'm going to focus more on being sexy than silly. I'm interested in seeing what the audience thinks of someone who is in love with the art of making fake love.
Short Smack
Where does your name come from?
It's my name for all shenanigans.
How many times have you competed?
Just one—if you don't count the times alone in my room.
What made you decide to enter?
It looked like fun. And I yearned for glory.
Any big plans for the Finals performance?
I can't reveal much, but I'll say this: It'll be messy. It's always messy.
