Four reasons not to scramble for a date on Valentine’s Day
Feb 12, 2012 | 11:15 am
Valentine's Day. Love it or hate it, it comes every year. If you’re without a significant other this February, there’s a lot of pressure to try to find a date or just feel miserable about being alone. I started pinkkisses.com in 2010 to give women an online community to help them bounce back after a breakup. Here are four ideas on why you should stop hunting for a man and start being happy solo:
1. It’s more important to be happy on your own than miserable with a stranger. Being a party of one has plenty of benefits. You can play by your own rules, plan new adventures whenever you like and focus on personal growth. You can challenge yourself to be happy flying solo, instead of scrambling desperately for a random date to make you feel better about your life.
How about this for a new perspective: your life is perfect just as it is. Don’t focus on the societal pressure of a man-made holiday, focus on the fact that you get to spend Feb. 14 — and every other day — just as you please, on your own terms.
2. He’ll have to buy you a gift on the first date. Sure, if you put your mind to it, a friend or coworker might just find you someone to go on a date with for Valentine’s Day… or you may get on every dating website known to man and end up with a plethora of options. But, do you really want to go on a first date on Valentine’s Day, with all of the hyped-up expectations and lovey-dovey couples?

Plus, expectations are always tough on a relationship… starting one on Valentine’s Day gives the relationship a lot of live up to, right off the bat. Feigning a love for red roses when you secretly hate them is not the best way to be your most genuine self.
3. A man can’t cure you, but an adventure can. Instead of stalking the guy on the treadmill next to you or deciding you’re going to make that guy in the office notice you in the next week, why not check something off your wish list that you’ve always wanted to do? Whether it’s checking out the new coffee shop across town or going on a road trip across the country, starting a new book or doing a technology cleanse for the day, now is your chance.

Trying to complete yourself by finding a guy won’t work, but focusing on being complete without one will. Who says you can’t celebrate Valentine’s Day as a single girl? Take the day to fall a bit more in love with yourself and your incredible little life.
4. No one can write you a better love letter. Listen, this may sound cheesy, but do it anyway. Instead of daydreaming about Mr. Right and how romantic he’ll be once he sweeps you off your feet and the two of you fall madly in love, think instead about the incredible journey you’re on right this second, discovering the kind of person you want to be.

Take out a piece of paper and write yourself a letter. Imagine it’s 20 years from now, imagine all of the things you will have accomplished, the places you’ll go and people you’ll meet. Write a letter about how lovely your life is, right where you are with so much possibility ahead. Write down all of the reasons you have to hope, write about what you believe and who you’re meant to be. Write about everything and nothing. Then, stick it in the mail and send it to yourself.
Happy Valentine’s Day, bombshell!
