The Summer of Fun: Four summer-long music and movie events for kids and parents to enjoy together

Summertime is back in Central Texas, ushering in the signature heat waves and the long, lazy days of easy living.

For those of you looking for fun, free (or cheap) events for the whole family, we compiled our list of the top four choices to please Austin kids of any age:

KGSR’s Blues on the Green, Zilker Park (Free)

Taking place every other Wednesday throughout the summer is one of Austin’s longest running summer concerts, Blues on the Green. They kick off their summer concert series on Wednesday afternoon with Southern crooner Charlie Mars and opening act Max Gomez. Bring the family, a blanket and enjoy this midweek reprieve.

The Austin Symphony Concerts in the Park, Hartman Concert Park at the Long Center (Free)

Add a little culture to your family’s summer (and experience high art for free) with The Austin Symphony’s Concerts in the Park.

Each Sunday evening throughout summer a different section of the symphony will perform jazz, classical, pop ensembles and film scores. Attendees are encouraged to pack a picnic and blanket and join Austin’s Symphony for a relaxed and fun outdoor experience.

Music Under the Star, The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum (Free)

Under the 35-foot bronze star in front the Bob Bullock museum, Fridays in July transform the Lone Star Plaza into a full-blown party. The museum will be providing free tacos, dessert (Blue Bell Ice-cream) and Honest Tea while supplies last. Get there early, bring a blanket and enjoy great music for the whole family. Bonus: tour the museum for free during the concert.

Deep Eddy Summer Splash Movie Series, Deep Eddy Pool ($1-3)

What’s better than a day of swimming and sunbathing at the Pool?  Getting to stay the night to watch a movie while you swim! Watch a fun selection of movies for the whole family on a 20’ x 11’ screen. Admission fees includes both the movie and pool entry.
