Bike Thieves
Austin Police release more information about renegade bicycle thief
An alleged bicycle thief caught on camera stealing four bikes worth more than $14,000 from an East Austin garage is still at large. Today, the Austin Police Department released additional information about the suspect including a vehicle description.
According to the Austin Police Department, the suspect was last seen driving a dark colored SUV or pickup truck. The department previously released a description of the suspect who is white or Hispanic, medium build and approximately 25 to 35 years of age.
There have been 38 bicycle thefts in Austin since January, a statistic that has the bicycle community on edge. The Crestview and Allandale neighborhoods have been particularly hard hit, accounting for more than 20 of the robberies. In response to these brazen attacks, local cyclists have raised $3,000 for any information leading to an arrest and conviction of the thief.
APD is urging members of the community to remain vigilant, keep bikes secure and call 911 to report anything suspicious.
