Weekday Warrior: Our guide to getting through this week's 9 to 5
This weekend might mark one of Austin’s biggest (and drunkest) events, but that doesn’t mean you’re doomed to spend Monday-Thursday twiddling your thumbs waiting to hear Stevie Wonder belt out “Sir Duke.”
Sure, the naysayer would say it’s probably best to stay in this week and rest. But we say, live a little! From a teen angst throwback to a Streisand classic and a concert your mom would love to go to, Austin’s got a lot to offer this week.
Here’s our (inaugural) weekly guide to keep you busy during the days that don’t start with S.
Monday, 9/12
Santana with Michael Franti and Spearhead @ ACL Live
Carlos and the Santana Band will perform classics from the group’s four-decades-long career, and spotlight songs from Santana’s latest album, Guitar Heaven: The Greatest Guitar Classics of All Time. Mom would SO approve.
Amazing Acrocats @ City Theater
These are no ordinary cats. They jump. They juggle. They play music. They’re like feline versions of Justin Timberlake.
Geeks who Drink Trivia @ Upper Deck
With a random smattering of categories, ranging from song clips to “TV Shows Your Parents Watch,” this nationally known trivia event can’t be beat. So brush up on your ‘Alias’ knowledge, nerds.
TV Dinner Classic Nickelodeon Shows @ Highball
Sit down with your fellow 90’s enthusiasts for the best in weird, wacky and “after school special-y” that Nickelodeon has to offer. No word on whether Stick Stickley will be there, though.
Tuesday, 9/13
Teen Angst Tuesdays- Felicity @ Highball
Relive the drama of freshman year with Felicity, Noel, and the gang, as they over-analyze pretty much everything.
Join the sweetly sensitive Justin Vernon and Bon Iver as they perform tracks from For Emma, Forever Ago, and Bon Iver.
Wednesday, 9/14
Celluloid Handbag Presents: FUNNY GIRL @ Alamo Ritz
Rebecca Havermeyer and her pre-show from hell presents to you the greatest gift tha’ world has ever seen or heard … it’s FUNNY GIRL!
A Night with ‘Deadliest Catch’ @ Paramount Theater
Spend the evening with the captains of this oddly captivating Discovery Channel show.
Thursday, 9/15
ACL Live and Jack Daniels Present “The Jack and Jim Gallery”
ACL Live will debut a 30-photograph exhibit from famed photographer Jim Marshall, who has captured some of the biggest names in music.
Following a short film the Austin Symphony Orchestra keeps things going with pieces by Mexican composers followed by various speeches, traditional bands, and ballet folklorico performances.
So whether you’re remembering Keri Russell’s luscious pre-cancelation locks, getting all 90’s with DOUG, or plotting how you’ll train your cat to do back flips, the event calendar is aplenty in these pre-ACL days. Go forth, my friends, and remember to hydrate.
