battle for blood (donations)
We are Blood brings back blood donor competition featuring Austin first responders
A popular friendly competition to increase blood donations in the Austin area is returning at the end of June. We Are Blood's "Battle of the Badges" will run June 26 through July 5, with four teams of Austin first responders striving to recruit the most blood donors.
The 10-day donation drive is We Are Blood's primary campaign to increase the blood supply around the Independence Day holiday. With the academic school year ending and Austinites going on summer vacations, donations typically take a hit during the busy summer season.
The Travis County Sheriff's Office, Austin Police Department, Austin Fire Department, and Austin-Travis County EMS are the four competing teams. The agency that receives the most votes and donations wins a special Battle of the Badges trophy.
ATCEMS Chief Robert Luckritz said in a press release that the EMS is thrilled to be partnering with We Are Blood for another year of the competition.
"This blood drive is a fantastic opportunity to not only increase blood donations around the region but also to engage in some friendly competition with our public safety partners," Luckritz said. "As an EMS agency that carries whole blood, it is incredibly important to our mission to have an adequate blood supply in Austin, and we rely on the generosity of We Are Blood’s donors to make sure both ATCEMS and our hospital partners have access to this precious resource."
Austinites can visit any of We Are Blood's donation centers during the 10-day timeframe to donate and cast their vote for their favorite agency, or participate in one of the mobile drives. As an incentive for participants, anyone who donates blood or platelets will receive a limited edition t-shirt.
