KUT hosts 2 free events to strengthen civic engagement in Austin
If you’ve ever wondered what happens behind the scenes at Austin City Council meetings, KUT is offering two upcoming opportunities to learn more. With free events on Tuesday, May 21, and Wednesday, May 22, the local nonprofit newsroom is hosting Civics 101 week, a week of reporting and free community events to help strengthen local civic engagement.
Sponsored by the League of Women Voters Austin Area, Big Country Organic Brewing Co., and City of Austin Financial Services, Civics 101 week centers around a series of stories and events exploring how things work in Austin. Focused on the ways local government impacts daily lives, topics will include property taxes, Central Health, who is responsible when power goes out, and more.
The goal of the week is to help local citizens better understand how their government works and what role each individual can play in a thriving democracy. Tuesday’s event focuses on the role of the city budget, offering attendees the chance to learn how the City of Austin manages its $5.5 billion budget for 2023-2024 through a real game of The Price is Right. Kicking off at 6 pm at Austin PBS studios, the live, on-stage event will unveil what goes into decisions around local services, infrastructure, and other priorities from the mayor and city council when a new budget is approved.
With educational games, hands-on activities, and complimentary beverages, the interactive event is a collaboration with three other local organizations: The Austin Common, Austin PBS and Good Politics. Attendees will also have a chance to meet candidates running to be the next mayor of Austin.
The following day, KUT will host a community discussion around civic duty with 1A’s Jenn White. Taking place at 6:30 pm at the Rollins Theater in the Long Center, the conversation will explore what local citizens can do to help democracy thrive beyond the ballot box. White will be joined by speakers from The Austin Common, KUT, and the University of Texas who are each working to educate, engage, and encourage their community to get involved in local government.
Free parking is available for the first 200 vehicles and a cash bar will be on site, while the event itself is free with RSVP.
