Austin city leaders detail SXSW plan for roads, public health

Road closures happen for all sorts of reasons during South by Southwest.
Excitement is building for South by Southwest (SXSW), one of Austin's biggest events of the year, which attracts thousands of people to the Capital City.
On Monday, city leaders gathered to address how they plan to navigate some of the challenges that come with the crowds and big events.
"As we welcome both visitors and plan for these events that are foundational for both our culture and our economy, we recognize the added strain that puts on city resources," Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said. "What it does for traffic congestion and [the] potential travel delays large-scale events can create."
Watson said the city is prepared, but he reminded the community of what to expect. Local leaders said people should anticipate street closures and a heavy flow of traffic. Some streets downtown will be blocked off with barricades or even parked police units.
"Consider using public transportation or rideshare services," Austin Police Department Chief Lisa Davis said. "Parking will be limited in and around downtown ... Parking and tow tollway zones will be strictly enforced."
Davis also said a larger police presence will be seen in the area, and she urged the public to say something if they see something suspicious.
"Our No. 1 priority is to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time at the festival," Davis said.
SXSW also comes amid a measles outbreak in Texas. Health officials are reminding people that the best way to prevent the spread of measles is to get vaccinated, which Watson said more people have been doing.
