April's Best Comedy
The top comedy shows in Austin will keep you laughing all month long
Moontower Comedy Festival returns to Austin at the end of the month, but there's no reason to wait that long for the laughs to start. Prime yourself for the big weekend with the best comedy shows in April, including iconic Esther's Follies funnies and top visiting talent.
The Hideout Theatre presents Camp Madupponaspotta: Every Saturday in April
Take a nostalgic trip to the good ol’ days of summer camp at the Hideout Theatre’s April show, Camp Madupponaspotta. Each Saturday, cast members lead the audience down memory lane with improvised stories and campfire songs. Hopefully no stories about the abomination known as powdered eggs surface.
Esther’s Follies presents “A Benefit for Cynthia Wood”: Sunday, April 6
The little theater on Sixth Street is holding a special comedy and variety show to benefit longtime cast member Cynthia Wood. Recently diagnosed with Lyme disease, Wood will greatly benefit from funds raised to help with her treatment; and, as a bonus, you get to laugh at the usual cavalcade of comedic impressions and dance numbers.
Cap City Comedy Club presents Mike E. Winfield: Wednesday, April 9 – Saturday, April 12
Mike Winfield is a young talent, but he’s already made waves with performances on shows including The Arsenio Hall Show and The Late Show with David Letterman (we’ll miss you, Dave). Winfield, who he even snagged a recurring role on The Officer, is primed to shine at Cap City.
LGBT Night at The New Movement with Kristen Becker: Sunday, April 13
Austin has some badass comedians, and a comedy scene that welcomes the funny members of the LGBT community with open arms. The New Movement will host its very first LGBT night, featuring a collection of Austin’s best and brightest, along with New York City’s Kristen Becker as the evening’s special guest.
ColdTowne’s Nice Astronaut presents “Back in Townsville”: Every Thursday in April
Nice Astronaut, one of ColdTowne Theater’s longest running improv troupes, puts a unique spin on the chaos that lurks behind the curtains of small-town government à la Parks & Recreation. Visit them every Thursday in April and every Saturday in May to see Mr. Mayor, his colleagues and all of the colorful townsfolk of Townsville battle it out at the Community Center.
Transmission Events presents Todd Barry: Sunday, April 27
Todd Barry is one of the most talented stand-up comedians touring today. So good, in fact, that he doesn’t even rely on pre-written material. In his Final Crowd Work Tour, Barry spends his entire set interacting with the crowd, relying on awkward and fascinating conversations to bring laughs to the table.
2014 Moontower Comedy & Oddity Festival: Wednesday, April 23 – Saturday, April 26
Moontower is the granddaddy of all comedy shows this month, with a lineup that boasts Hannibal Buress, Maria Bamford, Mike Birbiglia, Dennis Miller, Marc Maron and a host of others from across Austin and the U.S. Do yourself a favor by grabbing a badge to see these top-notch headliners.
