Austin Film Society hosts Dazed and Confused 30th anniversary celebration in September
UPDATE: The September 17 screening has been postponed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in Hollywood. The September 16 baseball game is still happening with Linklater's ceremonial first pitch, but the cast will no longer be in attendance.
If you can believe it, 30 years have passed since the cinematic "party at the moontower" that is Dazed and Confused. Premiering in September 1993, Richard Linklater's third feature film was largely shot in the Austin area and included local landmarks like Top Notch Hamburgers. To celebrate the film's 30th anniversary, several of the cast and crew will gather in Austin for a weekend of festivities from September 16-17.
Mostly shot in the Austin area, the film features a large ensemble cast with early career appearances from Ben Affleck, Parker Posey (Party Girl), Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element), Joey Lauren Adams (Chasing Amy), and Adam Goldberg (Saving Private Ryan). Of course, it was also the big screen debut for Matthew McConaughey with his iconic opening line: "Alright, alright, alright."
The 30th Anniversary weekend will include a Dazed and Confused-themed baseball game and a special outdoor screening of the film. The first will take place at the Round Rock Express on Saturday, September 16, featuring exclusive merchandise (a Dazed-inspired giveaway for the first 1,500 fans), a pre-game cast reunion and panel discussion with members of the film's cast, and a ceremonial first pitch thrown by Linklater.
Round Rock Express players will wear special Dazed-themed on-field jerseys, which will be autographed by the players for auction after the game, alongside a jersey autographed by the attending Dazed cast and an autographed #34 Nolan Ryan jersey to benefit the Austin Film Society (AFS) and the Nolan Ryan Foundation. The evening will conclude with fireworks over Dell Diamond set to the tunes of Dazed and Confused. Tickets for the Round Rock Express game are available here.
Then, on Sunday, September 17, Waterloo Greenway will screen the film at the Moody Ampitheater, followed by a special Q&A with Linklater and select cast members. Presented by AFS and Focus Features, the evening will begin with some pre-show content around 7:30 pm, and the film will start at 8:30 pm. After the screening, the Q&A discussion will reflect on the legacy of the film.
General admission tickets are available for pre-set seats or bring-your-own-picnic-blanket spots on the lawn of the park. VIP Premium Lawn seats will also be available for purchase and include access to a sponsored bar and an exclusive poster for the event. There will also be exclusive 30th anniversary-themed Dazed and Confused merchandise for sale throughout the evening. Proceeds from this screening will benefit the Austin Film Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports local independent filmmakers and emerging creators and shows films year-round at the AFS Cinema, a non-commercial art house theater. Tickets to the Waterloo Greenway outdoor screening are available here with discounts on general admission tickets for AFS members.
