Furniture Mall of Texas shuttering with huge sale after 3 years in Austin

Another local furniture store is biting the dust. The Furniture Mall of Texas, established by the owners of the Furniture Mall of Kansas and Austin Couch Potatoes, is closing its doors.

The closure was announced on the store's Facebook page on April 6, with the addition that there would be a "multi-million dollar store closing forever sale." The mall's website says all furniture, including the mattresses and signature Amish lines, will be "sacrificed at 50-70 percent off."

The mall doesn't have an official closing date just yet, according to a customer service representative. The store may run out of inventory on site and at the warehouse before any projected date.

More than 100,000 square feet of inventory will be sold off during the furniture mall's liquidation sale, including the "largest mattress gallery in Central Texas," a video on the store's Facebook page says.

The Furniture Mall of Texas was first conceptualized by Austin Couch Potatoes co-owners Brian Morgan, Travis Morgan, and Dan Anthony in 2020, according to a blog post on the store's website. The trio tapped Jeff and Jaime Winters, the owners of the Furniture Mall of Kansas, for their "innovative furniture shopping experience" and high prioritization of customer service.

After many delays, among them the COVID-19 pandemic and Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, The Furniture Mall of Texas opened its doors to shoppers on March 6, 2021.

"As the months carried on, the Furniture Mall of Texas has worked on finding its voice in the crowded city of Austin and communicating to its residents its mission to deliver an unforgettable shopping furniture experience," the blog post said. "There is still much to work on, but every day is a new opportunity to learn and grow."

Now the store is on its way out three years later, following the likes of the Austin Antique Mall, which will close in May, and Louis Shanks, which shuttered its last two remaining stores in Austin and San Antonio in fall 2023.

The Furniture Mall of Kansas still operates five stores and outlets in Topeka and Olathe, Kansas, and in Lee's Summit, Missouri.

Furniture chain American Freight closing Austin and all other stores

There's a big sale going on at American Freight.

There's a huge sale on furniture going down right now, but for a sad reason: American Freight, a chain of furniture stores operating in dozens of states, is permanently shuttering all 328 locations, due to “sustained inflation and macroeconomic challenges,” according to its parent company.

That includes one store in Austin, at 13435 N. Highway 183, Ste. 101.

The closing comes after its parent company, Franchise Group, Inc., filed for bankruptcy protection, according to documents filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware.

Store closing sales began on November 5, both online and at its 328 locations. Hilco Consumer-Retail is managing these sales for American Freight as the business winds down its operations nationwide. Significant discounts are being offered on the brand's full assortment of inventory.

Shoppers can save up to 30 percent off the lowest ticketed prices storewide. Available items include living room sets, bedroom furniture, dining tables, and a selection of scratch & dent and new in-box appliances, such as refrigerators, washers and dryers.

New inventory is arriving and expected to move quickly, so customers should take advantage of this prime opportunity to enjoy exceptional deals before it's too late.
