Community comes first for this strategy-minded Austin broker
Native Austinite Brandy Finnessey prides herself on being involved in something larger than herself. The community-minded broker has watched Austin grow and change dramatically over the past 30 years, and she has gained a unique perspective of the city's rhythm by living in each of the four quadrants of Austin.
After graduating from Southwest Texas University — now known as Texas State University — Finnessey started in real estate in 2003, working with a well-known Central Texas builder. During her five-plus years working on the builder side, helping clients with everything from design conception to inspection, financing to closing, there was little in the build/buy process that Finnessey hadn't encountered.
That familiarity with the ins and outs of building allows Finnessey to see past the sheetrock, and she now passes that extensive knowledge on to her Kuper Sotheby's International Realty clients. She is also one of only a handful of Austin-area Realtors to have the designation of Certified Real Estate Divorce Specialist, and is an expert on working equally for both parties so that divorcing homeowners can get the most of their real estate transaction.
Now a resident of West Austin with her firefighter husband, two sons, and two boxers Ginger and Jake, Finnessey is heavily involved in various community activities and charitable organizations.
We chatted with Finnessey to find out more about her work and what drives her.
CultureMap: What inspires you to do what you do?
Brandy Finnessey: I believe that I am truly making a difference or impact in someone’s life. We as Realtors are entrusted to see inside of people’s most intimate spaces: where they gather together in happy times and retreat in sad ones. I feel honored to be asked to help people in not just safeguarding their investment, but helping select the home that will define their family.
CM: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to people looking for their dream home?
BF: Take your time and seek guidance from someone who not only truly knows the area, but understands exactly what is important to you and your family. Who you select will not only impact your finances immediately, but also your future. Be sure this person is the right person.
CM: Sum up Austin in three words.
BF: Home. Lively. Inviting.
CM: What do you consider your "special skill"?
BF: Strategy! I am detailed and methodical about devising the perfect plan to get the desired outcome. I am able to see the possibilities and road bumps that may be encountered, and always have plans for them. Never allowing my clients to be blindsided or surprised by something that should have been anticipated and planned for allows me to protect them, while streamlining the process so it feels smooth.
CM: Finish the sentence: "It's a good day when..."
BF: I've exceeded my own expectations. I am my toughest critic — I look at every challenge as an opportunity to grow and do better.
