Sweet San Antonio bakery delivers colorful creations to Austin
Since opening for business earlier this month, a new family-owned bakery has enthralled the Alamo City with its intricately designed treats — and now it's expanding its delivery service to Austin.
Operating out of a home kitchen, San Antonio's Capcakes bakery recently made a splash on social media with its colorful sugar cookie designs paying homage to San Antonio culture — everything from pastel folklorico dancers and multi-colored piñata to neon Spurs logos.
For Lilia Madrigal, who moved to San Antonio 12 years ago, the cookies are a way of giving back to the city she fell in love with. “[Lilia] draws inspiration from the sights she sees around town, from what we San Antonians take pride in and connect with,” says her husband, and Capcakes co-founder, Daniel Barrera.
Using recipes passed down for three generations, they, alongside co-founder Alejandro Madrigal, spend weekends in the kitchen creating uniquely designed confections. According to Barrera, the team averages 10 new designs weekly.
The eye-catching cultural designs are Capcakes' hot-ticket item, but the bakery boasts an impressive variety of cookie art, including holiday and birthday offerings. For those craving a more personalized touch, customization is available.
“Just yesterday we had someone request ninjas and throwing stars,” says Barrera. “It’s not something we’ve done before, but given our skill set, we can tackle anything.”
This world of possibilities also extends to their custom cake operation, which Barrera believes sets Capcakes apart from more narrowly focused baking operations of a similar size. Madrigal's artistry runs the gamut, from creating career-themed dioramas to a life-sized replica of the Madrigal family’s terrier.
While the bakery is still “feeling out” the Austin and San Antonio markets, the family’s goal is to eventually move into a brick-and-mortar space, where they'll offer baking demonstrations, classes, and take-home cookie decorating kits.
For now, customers in both Austin and San Antonio can order cookies and cakes one week in advance via the website. (Custom orders require at least a two-week minimum.) Prices start at $28 for a half-dozen cookies and include a seasonally rotating array of designs.
