John Mueller rides again as the food curator of Fun Fun Fun Fest
He’s had his fair share of downfalls and second chances, but the recent rebirth of a Texas barbecue virtuoso has legs at this point. John Mueller, master of the beef short ribs, will be food curator for Fun Fun Fun Fest this year, selecting which food vendors will open up shop at the nonconformist music and comedy festival.
“I thought long and hard about why the hell they called me,” says Mueller, “I was cooking early in the morning … and the answer was clear: Aaron Franklin wasn’t available.”
At a special press conference on Thursday held at Kellee’s Place on E. Sixth St. and Pedernales — the backyard of which serves as the home of John Mueller’s barbecue pits — he took to the podium in a coat-and-shorts combo to accept his new duty.
“I thought long and hard about why the hell they called me,” says Mueller, “I was cooking early in the morning … and the answer was clear: Aaron Franklin wasn’t available.”
Mueller is ready and excited to help the rest of the FFF team bring unique trailers to the 2013 festival. Interested food trucks will apply online to earn a spot at the festival, which is expected to bring in more than 18,000 people — that’s a lot of hungry mouths ready to see Snoop Lion, Slayer, MGMT, M.I.A. and plenty more.
The larger-than-life personality of Mueller is a headliner himself, and his somewhat temperamental persona should make for some interesting dealings with possible applicants. “They’re gonna blame it all on me, so if you’re not chosen then I get all the blame,” Mueller jokes. “That’s why I’m here.”
You can all go to Hell, but it's clear that John Mueller will go to Auditorium Shores from November 8 – 10.
