UPDATE: A previous version of this story reported that Velvet Taco was opening an additional location in South Congress Avenue's Music Lane development. There are no plans for that location.

The Scarborough Building might be 119 years old, but it will soon be a hot spot for millennials. Velvet Taco will soon be opening in the historic high-rise.
A spokesperson for the trendy Dallas-based chain tells CultureMap that the restaurant will open at 522 Congress Ave., Ste. 100 in December. It is the second location for Austin, following the eatery’s debut at Domain Northside in March 2017.
The upscale counter service restaurant is known for globally inspired tacos filled with ingredients like tikka masala chicken and cilantro basmati rice; Nashville hot tofu with napa slaw, ranch crema, and house-brined pickles; and slow-roasted pulled pork with shaved ham, bacon, and Gruyere.
The brunch offerings are also popular. Think crispy chicken tenders and peppered bacon wrapped in a waffle “tortilla” or a bacon and egg creation with smoked cheddar and chile butter.
For drinks, Velvet Taco offers a signature Kick Ass Margarita, made from Lunazul tequila, fresh lime juice, agave nectar, and orange liqueur. Local beer and craft sodas round out the beverage menu.
The new outpost will continue downtown Austin’s recent taco takeover. Torchy’s Tacos rolled into 110 San Antonio St. in December 2018, followed by a new Tacodeli in June.
Downtown, Velvet Taco will be joined by the second Austin storefront of Punch Bowl Social.
