National food mag Bon Appétit joined the local taco conversation Wednesday by announcing its picks for the 10 best tacos in Austin.
On an assignment that makes us equal parts jealous and hungry, writer Andrew Knowlton spent three days trekking around town tasting tacos. During the long weekend, he devoured at least 58 tacos "in search of Austin’s greatest and most diverse culinary star."
Before launching into his choices, Knowlton gives a little lesson in "Taco 101" — you know, drink Topo Chico, accompany with chips and queso and other necessary tidbits. He also outlines where you'll find the best breakfast tacos in "Taco Town," focusing on cult favorites and taco mainstays. Joe's Bakery & Coffee Shop tops the list, followed by Maria's Taco Xpress, Tacodeli, El Primo and Tamale House East (duh).
And as any local will tell you, Knowlton acknowledges it's "absurd to pick only 10 of the best [tacos] in town." But, it's his duty, so he chooses the tacos that are still haunting him after his "epic crawl."
A few no-brainers make the cut (Veracruz All Natural's migas, smoked brisket from Valentina's Tex Mex BBQ), but overall, the picks are diverse, authentic and relatively under-the-radar. What you won't find are fast-food tacos or their pricey $6 counterparts. (Better luck next time, Torchy's.)
