Top Austin bartender’s exotic bourbon cocktail inspires wanderlust
The cocktail that Austin bartender Alex Shoemaker mixes up for the fifth episode of Old Forester’s Cocktail Chronicles might inspire some tropical wanderlust. Coconut meringue, star anise, and Thai tea syrup all go into the drink, along with tonka bean bitters and orange peel.

Mekhong Me Cray
Yields 1 drink
1.5 ounces Old Forester 1897 Bottled in Bond
2 dashes tonka bean bitters
2 dashes star anise bitters
1.5 ounces Thai tea syrup
Coconut meringue
Grated star anise
Orange peel
Add bourbon, bitters, and syrup to a mixing glass. Add ice.
Stir for eight seconds, then strain and pour over ice sphere.
Garnish with coconut meringue.
Express orange oil over drink and top with grated star anise.
