Meet At First Light
New independent bookstore and cafe shines in former Hyde Park post office
Austinites have a new local gem to explore: First Light Books has opened its doors in Austin's historic Hyde Park neighborhood. Inspired by the feeling of possibility at daybreak — which is basically when the coffee window opens — First Light offers a wide selection of books from literary fiction to popular nonfiction and memoirs.
"At First Light, we see the book as a kind of magic trick. A skeleton key that can open minds, dust up ideas, and time-travel us into new worlds," said co-founder Taylor Bruce in a press release.
There will be sections tailored to niche interests like photography, gardening, and architecture, as well as a robust kids' section. The newsstand will also stock a range of obscure and popular magazines and newspapers. Beyond books, First Light will sell stationery, games, art supplies, and other book-inspired items.
The store's cafe aims to further serve the neighborhood, with morning pastries from the recently rehabbed Texas French Bread and coffee from Figure 8. Evening offerings feature European-inspired fare and local beer and wine.
First Light was created by Mr. Bruce and his wife, Robin Bruce, along with hospitality expert Breezy Mayo. Their vision, forged early in their marriage while walking around the streets where First Light now breaks, was to open a neighborhood bookstore that felt like home and brought the community together.
Fittingly, the independent bookstore is located in a former Post Office building, where it aims to be a gathering place for readers and non-readers alike.
Mrs. Bruce highlights that independent booksellers like First Light can foster meaningful relationships with readers in a way that national sellers can't. A major component of First Light is its slate of community programming for both adults and children. Events like happy hours, book clubs, author readings, and kids' storytimes will take place year-round.
"In a world of hashtags and algorithms, independent shops like First Light provide the joy of discovery via friends and neighbors," she says in an interview with CultureMap. “Our hope is that First Light is a place for neighbors and community to be together, to swap ideas, to explore new ones, and to enjoy a delicious coffee or glass of wine while you’re at it.”
The opening weekend was a big success, with book-lovers coming out to support the new local business.
"The opening was a blast," says Mrs. Bruce. "It was so encouraging to see Austin really show up for a local shop like ours."
Although the book-devoted owners of First Light didn't follow any bookstore-specific business writing, Mrs. Bruce says restaurateur Danny Meyer's book Setting the Table was instrumental in thinking about hospitality and customer service.
With its cozy atmosphere, robust event schedule, and hand-curated selection of books, First Light looks poised to become a treasured neighborhood hub for Austinites to gather, explore new ideas, and celebrate the joy of reading together.
First Light books is located at 4300 Speedway. The coffee window opens daily at 7 am, followed by the rest of the store from 9 am to 9 pm. More information is available at firstlightaustin.com.
