9 Austin chefs and restaurants score James Beard Award semifinalist nominations for 2024
Austin is well represented on this year’s list of semifinalists for the James Beard Awards. Released today, the Austin-area group includes nine nominations split between five nominees for Best Chef: Texas and four nominees for national award categories.
The local nominees for Best Chef: Texas are:
- Tavel Bristol-Joseph, Canje
- Geoff Ellis, Mum Foods Smokehouse & Delicatessen
- Joseph Gomez, Con Todo
- Tracy Malechek-Ezekiel, Birdie's
- Fermín Nuñez, Suerte
The nominees in the national categories are:
- Best New Restaurant: Ramen Del Barrio
- Best New Restaurant: Barbs-B-Q (Lockhart)
- Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker: Mariela Camacho, Comadre Panadería
- Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program: Bufalina
Considered the Oscars of the food world, the awards recognize excellence by chefs and other culinary professionals in a wide range of categories ranging from Outstanding Chef to Best New Restaurant. Winner must also have “demonstrated commitment to racial and gender equity, community, sustainability, and a culture where all can thrive,” according to the organization’s website. The awards also include media categories that will be announced on April 30. Recipients of the coveted America’s Classic award will be announced on February 28.
Elsewhere in Texas, San Antonio has six nominations, Dallas boasts eight nominees, and Houston received 11.
Austin received three more nominations this year than in 2023. Two are repeats, which did not make it to the final round last year, but hopefully fare better this time: Tavel Bristol-Joseph and Mariela Camacho. (James Beard awards nominees are never hurting for press, anyway, so just a nomination is more than halfway to a win.)
Finalists will be announced on April 3. The Foundation will reveal its winners at an awards ceremony on June 10 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
