Six pack abs and rock hard bodies: Athletes fight to be Austin's fittest
As I walked around Camp Mabry Saturday during the 2012 Austin Fit Magazine Austin Fittest competition, I couldn't help but wonder how long I'd have to go without breakfast tacos and Oreos in order to obtain the rock hard bodies everyone around me was sporting.
The physique and fitness levels of those participating were an impressive (and humbling) sight that proves how Austin deserves its ranking as one of the country's most in-shape cities.
About 300 athletes of all ages (including people over 60) participated in Austin Fit Magazine's inaugural Austin Fittest event, which aimed to find the 10 fittest people in Austin based on the results of ten fitness tests that measured strength, endurance, agility, speed, power, precision and conditioning.
With hundreds watching and the sun beating down, participants knocked out burpees, broad jumps, medicine ball tosses, push ups and more, finishing with a one mile run. As you might imagine, it was exhausting just watching them do it all.
While difficult, anyone with a reasonable level of fitness could have completed the challenge. Next year organizers hope more "everyday" people (not just those with bulging biceps) will come out to test their fitness levels and enjoy the benefits of living an active lifestyle in an active community.
The top 5 male and female winners for each age group will be prominently profiled in Austin Fit Magazine’sannual Fittest issue in August.
