A new dog park will take shape near Auditorium Shores.
KVUE -- On Wednesday evening, a group of dog owners and runners met at Auditorium Shores to hear about and see the space for a new off-leash dog park.
The six-acre lawn commonly referred to as Auditorium Shores is presently an off-leash area for dogs with access to the water. However, beginning in late August or September the area will close to all dogs.
The Austin Parks and Recreation Department has plans to renovate the six-acre lawn to make it more mixed-use friendly.
The Austin Parks Foundation and C3 Presents donated $1.1 million for the new dog park which is west of the present off-leash area, not far from the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge. The new off-leash area will be smaller than the current space by almost half, some 3.2 acres.
The new area will also include water access for dogs 365 days a year, something which the current six-acre space doesn’t offer because of the many events at Auditorium Shores. The City of Austin says the entire project should be completed by 2015.
