From December 20 through April 12, Delta Air Lines will offer once-a-day nonstop service between Austin and Cancun, Mexico, the airline says in an announcement.
Delta also is rolling out a once-a-day nonstop route between Austin and San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, from December 20 to January 5. This route would enable Central Texas travelers to soak up the sun during the Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Year’s holiday season.
These seasonal flights “provide Austin customers even more international options and [make] travel to Mexico even more convenient,” Delta said in an announcement.
Delta will compete with American and Southwest airlines on the nonstop Austin-Cancun and Austin-Cabo routes.
Last year, Delta was the third busiest airline at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) based on passenger counts, behind No. 1 Southwest and No. 2 American, according to the airport. Delta’s AUS passenger traffic climbed 20 percent from 2023 to 2024, compared with 5.2 percent at Southwest and 18.6 percent at American.
The Nerd Ka Travel website says Delta expects a more than 35 increase in departures from Austin in 2025 compared with 2024.
“The airline positions [AUS] expansions as part of a broader effort to strengthen its role as a key carrier in the region,” Nerd Ka says.
While American has recently scaled back its AUS presence, “Delta … has taken the opportunity to expand its footprint in Austin,” Nerd Ka adds. “It remains to be seen whether Delta can sustain and grow its route network from AUS over the long term, particularly as the tech sector has yet to fully rebound. However, Delta appears more willing to commit for the long haul, even if it means weathering short-term losses.”
