Austin's newest park, complete with pool and gardens, opens to the public
The rising temperatures shouldn't keep you from enjoying summer in Austin. We have a ton of parks to play in, and the city's newest green space debuts Saturday, July 23.
Named after Austin's first black police officer, John Gaines Park is located in the Mueller development between Sorin and Tilley streets. The 3.6-acre park features a swimming pool, picnic area, and community garden.
The garden boasts over 130 plots designed by Pharis Design with input from the Sustainable Food Center, and comes complete with compost bins, a covered work area, and communal tool shed. The pool area has a large lap pool along with a separate children’s wading pool, changing facilities, and a trellis. There's also a large sports lawn for endless activity possibilities.
This is the third green space in Mueller designed to entice neighbors and others from the Austin community. But that's not all that's beckoning folks to the area.L'Oca d'Oro, Kyoten Sushiko's brick-and-mortar, and a second Bribery Bakery location are a few of the hot spots that have opened recently. On the horizon is a brand-new Alamo Drafthouse and a WhichCraft Beer Store.
The opening celebration of John Gaines Park is this Saturday from 10 am to noon. After remarks from city officials, everyone is invited to play lawn games and enjoy live tunes from the Nash Hernandez Orchestra.
