Austin all-stars nab best chef nominations from James Beard Awards
The 2015 James Beard Foundation Award Nominees have been announced, and two Austin all-stars are still in the running. Aaron Franklin of Franklin Barbecue fame and Bryce Gilmore of Barley Swine are nominated in the Best Chef: Southwest category.
Joining Franklin and Gilmore are a couple Texas talents: Hugo Ortega of Hugo's and Jason Yu of Oxheart, both in Houston. Martín Rios of Restaurant Martín in Santa Fe and Kevin Binkley of Binkley’s in Cave Creek, Arizona round out the category.
This is the first nomination for Franklin. Gilmore was also nominated in 2013 and 2014; the award went to Chris Shepherd of Houston's Underbelly last year.
Two locally produced pieces are nominated in the 2015 James Beard Foundation Journalism Awards . Caitlin Riley's "Le Kale Project" from Whole Foods Market publication Dark Rye is nominated in the Visual Storytelling category. Terry Thompson-Anderson's Texas on the Table: People, Places, and Recipes Celebrating the Flavors of the Lone Star State from University of Texas Press is nominated in the American Cooking category.
