Can’t you hear Peter Cottontail hopping down the bunny trail? That means that Easter’s on its way, but while the kids are preparing for another holiday of chocolate overindulgence, the grownups don’t want to be left with having fun this weekend.
We’ve already compiled an exhaustive list of the best brunch spots for Sunday; keep in mind these other top event picks for the weekend before you start sipping on those Easter mimosas.
Ballet Austin presents Cult of Color: Call to Color
Easter signifies spring rebirth and renewal with a flood of pastel colors, and Ballet Austin will celebrate the colorful holiday with this unique production of Trenton Doyle Hancock’s art, Cult of Color: Call to Color. Hancock’s mythological story follows the journey of vegan pries, Sesom, as he seeks to bring color back to the monochrome underworld.
The visual art by Hancock is combined with Stephen Mills’ choreography and Graham Reynolds’ music for a one-of-a-kind performance that celebrates the brief return of fair weather to Austin.
Jo’s 14th Annual Easter Pet Parade
Our town may not have an iconic Easter parade similar to the one on New York’s Fifth Avenue (or even one that inspires a musical with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire). That’s all fine with us, because instead, we like to dress up our pets in goofy clothing and flaunt them down South Congress.
Once registered, deck your dogs in some far-out costumes to compete for prizes fit for humans and canines alike. The kids can even enjoy time with the Easter bunny and the bouncy castle.
Texas Rollergirls — Bout 2 of the 2013 Season
Some folks may prefer their Easter to be a little bit more action packed. The Texas Rollergirls will hop back on the track for their second derby of the 2013 season, starting off with a throw down between the Hustlers and the Hotrod Honeys and then a battle between Honky Tonk Heartbreakers and the Hell Marys, the defending champions of 2012.
Texas Rollergirls insists the bouts are family friendly, and to help convince parents of this, the derby will host some Easter egg hunts and face painting to keep the little rollers entertained.
Game of Thrones Season 3 at the North Door
The moment that fantasy nerds have been patiently waiting for is finally here. No, George R.R. Martin isn’t finished with the latest installment in the book series, but fans will receive the next best thing with the debut of Season 3 of the megahit HBO series. Unfortunately, you need HBO to actually watch the cable adaptation, or join the millions of other fans who download the show through less legal means.
Fortunately, the North Door is kind enough to help out fans that are too poor or too honorable by hosting a weekly live screening of the entire season every Sunday. The first episode will be preceded by the second season finale to get you up to speed, so keep this series in mind as a great way to socialize with your own nerdy kind every week.
