Her Pieness: Community comes together to help Pie Fixes Everything founder beat cancer
A fundraiser helmed by Springdale Farm and HOPE Farmers Market will bring the local food industry together in support of "Her Pieness" — the prominent figure behind one popular, Austin-born business.
Her Pieness, otherwise known as Colleen Sommers, founder and head baker at Pie Fixes Everything, was diagnosed with breast cancer this Spring.
Sommers is viewed within the Austin food community as a “welcoming, generous friend and neighbor to everyone,” explains Elizabeth Garrett, Manager at HOPE Farmers Market.
For five years, Pie Fixes Everything has maintained a reputation of supporting Austin area farmers by buying local, seasonally available ingredients and catering to the dietary restrictions of its clients. A woman of many talents, Sommers is held in high esteem in the art community of Austin, as well.
The fundraiser began as conversation among friends and quickly evolved into a full-scale event. “Pies & Pigs: A Benefit for Colleen Sommers” will take place at Springdale Farms’ East Austin location on Thursday, June 14 and will feature a variety of notable Austin food and beverage companies. All proceeds will be directed towards Colleen’s medical bills.
The benefit's mission is to “[bring] everybody together to support Colleen for her generosity and care. It is the least we could do for her,” says Garrett.
Multiple events highlight the fundraiser including dueling pigs roasted by Salt & Time and 3 Little Pigs. For non meat-eaters, Bola Pizza will be on hand with vegetarian pizzas.
Other attractions include live music by Greyhounds and Whiskey Shivers, a pie eating contest and an "art-and-food-focused" silent auction, featuring “Celebrity Chef Pies” made by prominent local restaurant and business owners.
Pigs, pies, drinks and music for a noble community cause — that's Austin, Texas at its finest.
