Weekend Roundup
Who needs Lollapalooza when you have these awesome weekend events?
If you see a few Austinites moping around this weekend, it’s likely because they couldn’t make it out to Lollapalooza. It’s not like they desperately want to go to one of the biggest music festivals of the year; the fest would just be a good excuse to skip town and enjoy the Chicago weather that will barely break 80 degrees.
But cheer up, because the weekend offers up plenty of entertainment options away from the sun. If you’re still sad about missing out on Chi-Town, just grab a deep-dish from Conan’s Pizza and watch The Blues Brothers. That’s good enough.
One Night with Janis Joplin
The new musical at the ZACH Theatre puts you in a vintage Volkswagen Bus and transports you back in time to experience the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Starring Kacee Clanton as Janis Joplin, you’ll not only see her perform some of Joplin’s greatest hits, but also other singers in the role of the many African-American blues artists that influenced her style of music.
The combination of singers in character and the live band creates a vibrant and colorful portrayal of the soulful singer that left us too soon. You can catch the show just about any time in August. See it before it makes its way to Broadway.
Fun Fun Fun Fest presents the Aqua Olympics
One of the most unique festivals in Austin and the world, Fun Fun Fun Fest already revealed the music acts that will grace the Blue, Orange and Black Stages. It’s the Yellow Stage of comedy talent that is yet to be revealed, and the Aqua Olympics will serve as the setting for announcing the funny people coming to Auditorium Shores from November 8 – 10.
Expect to partake in some water-based sporting events, like stand-up paddleboard jousting, and plenty more land games that will remind you of “field day” in elementary school. DJ uLOVEi will be spinning the tunes, and comedians Doug Mellard and Chris Cubas will be your play-by-play commentators. With a recent big reveal just for the food vendors at the fest, expect some awesome names to be announced for comedy.
Free Bollywood Day at the Long Center
With the new musical, Om Shanti – Once Upon a Time in Bollywood, set to debut later this month, the Long Center is shedding a special spotlight on South Asian culture with a free celebration featuring music, food and craft vendors.
But why stop there, when you can take a shot at breaking a Guinness World Record? Event organizers want to take a crack at breaking the world record for the number of dancers performing a Bollywood-style dance later in the evening. If you want to help out, show up early for two rehearsals and spend your downtime sampling some awesome Indian cuisine.
Jake Flores stand-up album recording
Austin is packed with young, talented comedians ready to make their big break, and one of them will get his shot this weekend. Jake Flores has made his mark around the Austin comedy scene, performing at events like Moontower Comedy Festival and Fun Fun Fun Fest, and touring the country with the Altercation Punk Comedy Tour. On Sunday at The New Movement Theater, he will record an album for Standup Records, so go out and support him. It’s just one way to keep Austin funny.
