Sweet Life
Sugar Mama's Bakeshop opens on east side and nabs former Contigo pastry chef
Life on the east side just got a little bit sweeter. Sugar Mama's Bakeshop has announced it will open its east side location on Saturday, August 9.
The hotly anticipated second location of the Kanye and Kim-approved bakery will spend two weeks in a soft opening period, working out kinks and counting down the days until it nabs a liquor license. Once the bakery is approved to serve booze, guests can look forward to enjoying a specialized evening dessert menu, which will undoubtedly make the shop a go-to destination for sips and sweets.
And that specialized menu will be crafted by Kendall Melton, the pastry chef who recently left Contigo, another East Austin establishment. While at Contigo, Melton garnered a reputation for her breads, brioche buns and other baked goods, solidifying her reputation as one of the premier bakers in town. She will join Sugar Mama's current cake decorator Karina Akhavan, who has Walton's Fancy & Staple and Bess Bistro on her resume. (Also, if you thought you were particularly accomplished, Akhavan is also a mother and one of Zagat's "30 Under 30.")
Fans of Sugar Mama's South Austin location can still buy the cupcakes, cookies and pies that made the shop famous, but at night, customers at the Manor outpost can also order plated desserts and choose selections from a beer and wine menu.
According to Eater Austin, the bakery's hours during the soft opening, which ends August 17, will be Tuesday-Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.
