Weekend Events Roundup
Our top weekend events will take you right into the danger(ously fun) zone
You might want to get those thermals, cardigans and Gore-Tex jackets out, because it appears that winter has swept through Central Texas, although to people from up north it’s more commonly known as “a mild fall.”
Celebrate the return of the brisk weather with some of the hottest events of the weekend — whenever you’re not gorging yourself with pumpkin-spiced everything, that is.
Friday, November 8
Archer Live at Bass Concert Hall
The cult of Archer is a very strong and vibrant community, always eagerly anticipating the return of new episodes featuring everyone’s favorite international spy and his dysfunctional team. It’s the super-talented cast of voice actors who help to make the show one of the best on TV right now, and Friday night will feature a chance for fans to see them in person, turn up the Kenny Loggins and drive off into the danger zone.
Visiting talent includes actors H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Amber Nash, Lucky Yates and Judy Greer, along with series executive producer Matt Thompson. The evening will include readings of classic scenes, an audience Q&A session and a moderated discussion, which will likely just turn into a conversation about how Burt Reynolds movies are the best movies.
Friday, November 8 – Sunday, November 10
What else needs to be said about one of the craziest festivals in Austin? You get a good mix of hip-hop, indie rock, metal, punk, comedy, skateboarding, wrestling, taco cannons and so much more. Within one day you can see Television, M.I.A., Descedents and Tenacious D. Few festivals can boast such wide-ranging diversity, and one of them happens to be right here, just over at Auditorium Shores.
And what’s great is that, in case you’ve been undecided this whole time, you can still grab single-day tickets. That’s a pretty great option if you want to save your energy for next weekend. Alternately, you can buy Miley Cyrus a pass for Friday so she can finally learn to twerk from Big Freedia and crew.
Saturday, November 9
Austin Classical Guitar Society Presents: Les Frères Méduses
Naturally, for every high-energy music festival, there needs to be a good alternative that’s more low-key, with fewer crowds to force your way through just to get to the bathroom. The Austin Classical Guitar Society hosts an evening with a more mellow feel to it and includes with two internationally renowned musicians.
Benoit Albert of France and Randall Avers of Norway are the duo formally known as Les Frères Méduses, or the “Jellyfish Brothers.” Their name is meant to evoke not only a sense of free-flowing energy, as seen in their improvisations, but also their sense of humor. The two will perform new compositions while keeping you entertained with their dynamic charm.
Saturday, November 9 – Sunday, November 10
21st Annual Art From the Streets
Offering a safe and positive environment for Austin’s homeless citizens to express their creative sides, Art From the Streets has been helping to give a voice to those who are often forgotten by others. To help continue with weekly sessions, Art From the Streets returns with its annual exhibition, featuring over 2,000 pieces of art for sale.
Paintings, drawings, photography, jewelry and pottery will be on display, giving festival-goers a chance not only to find a work of art that speaks to them, but also to give hope to artists striving to find a way to express themselves.
