Don't Interrupt, Rude.
Anjelah Johnson at the Paramount: Big on multicultural jokes, down on Bon QuiQui
Anjelah Johnson became an internet sensation in 2007 after a clip from her early stand-up days went viral. “Nail Salon” showcased Johnson’s eerily accurate impression of a Vietnamese nail salon employee that even had my mother, a former nail salon employee herself, howling and showing all of her friends and co-workers.
Johnson then went on to join the cast of MADtv and created another viral hit with “Bon Qui Qui” where she played a fast food employee who wasn’t so keen on delivering the best customer service to say the least.
Afterwards she appeared in movies like Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and guest starred on shows like Ugly Betty. These days, you can find her starring in various Taco Cabana commercials as the “TC girl.” After learning this, I couldn’t help but start to wonder—is there more to Anjelah Johnson than just those two bits? Curiosity got the best of me so I decided to check out her stand-up show at the Paramount Theater last night and I’m here to report that there is in fact, more to Anjelah Johnson than “Bon Qui Qui” and “Nail Salon.”
Johnson had the sold out crowd roaring last night. The topics she chose to talk about ranged from growing up as a “chola,” to solving relationship problems like you would if you had to fix an old Nintendo game. I was also pleasantly surprised to hear Johnson address her latest Taco Cabana gig and explain it in a rather matter-of-fact way: “Yes, I sold out for some tacos,” or something along those lines was the one sentence she used to clarify her decision for the gig. Once she said that, the “TC Girl” gig just didn’t seem all that desperate anymore.
It’s no surprise that Johnson’s strength lies in her cultural jokes—cultural jokes that specifically involve either Asian or Hispanic accents. She was able to explain the difference in how Puerto Ricans speak Spanish and how Mexicans speak Spanish with the former speaking the language as if they have water in their mouths that they don’t want to spill. Stop and think about it for a moment…it’ll come to you.
Things got slightly awkward as the crowd shouted out for “Bon Qui Qui,” while Johnson was trying to share the different type of merchandise she was selling and Johnson seemed reluctant at first ("Don't interrupt. Rude.") but ended up delivering the rap found in the Bon Qui Qui sketch. She then segued into talking about the surprising popularity of “Nail Salon,” and how she’s scared now to go into any nail salon.
I have to say, this seemed to be the highlight of the night. Being raised by two non-English speakers, I’m very familiar with the sound of broken English in a Vietnamese accent and Anjelah Johnson absolutely nails it. I also have to give her respect for being able to mimic the Vietnamese language so accurately without even saying a word in actual Vietnamese.
Overall, Anjelah Johnson delivered a great show last night. Her strengths are clearly in more cultural-centric jokes, but that’s fine by me because she does it so incredibly well.
