Dave Chappelle will kick off his summer tour in Austin with Flight of the Conchords
Comedy fans are in for a super-sized, if hot, treat this summer when Funny or Die's The Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival comes to town. Kicking off in Austin on Friday, August 23 at the Austin360 Amphitheater, the festival will feature a number of big name comedians, including Dave Chappelle and Flight of the Conchords.
Dave Chappelle is one of the enigmas of the comedy world. After a slow and steady rise, he found himself at the top of his field with his acclaimed Comedy Central series, Chappelle's Show. But just when he couldn't get any hotter, he walked away from the program in 2005, stunning fans and fellow comedians alike.
He cited his love of stand-up, and the program taking away from that, as one of the biggest reasons for his decision. This will be his highest-profile comedy tour in years. (Chappelle was in Austin last summer for a one-night engagement at the Paramount Theatre, widely regarded as a disastrous 90-minute set.)
Flight of the Conchords are beloved in many circles. The New Zealand duo of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are known for their routines that feature hilariously inappropriate songs, a routine which led to a short-lived HBO series that ended in 2009.
The festival, kicks off in Austin and will hit 13 cities (including Dallas and Houston). It will feature performances on two stages, and will also have out-of-the-norm things like street performers, psychics and "freaks." Other performers could include Al Madrigal from The Daily Show, Demetri Martin, Jim Jefferies and Kristin Schaal. Tickets go on sale on Friday, June 21.
