Classic Closure
Rare Globe Theatre replica in Austin closing after more than 20 years

The Curtain Theatre has been sold.
A longstanding staple of Austin’s arts community is preparing to close its doors. The Curtain Theatre, a replica of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre nestled along the shores of Lake Austin, will host its final production this October after more than 20 years of bringing classical works to life.
The Baron’s Men, a local theater company, have performed at the Curtain Theatre since it was built. Executive artistic director Lindsay M. Palinsky said the venue came about thanks to Richard Garriott, a friend of the founders, who offered to build them the Elizabethan-style space.
“There is no other stage like this in Austin or in Texas,” Palinsky said. “I believe The Curtain Theatre is one of maybe a half dozen Elizabethan replica theaters in the entire United States.”
Palinsky said their time at the theater is coming to an end because the property is being sold. Their upcoming October production will be their final show at The Curtain Theatre.
“It was, of course, heartbreaking and sad, but it’s a sign of the times,” she said. “We don’t have any details about what’s becoming of the property after we move out, but it’s sure to be an asset lost to the Austin creative scene.”
Despite the loss of their venue, The Baron’s Men plan to continue their work.
