KVUE -- As the sun set on his gravesite for the first time, surrounded by flowers, wreaths and a flag, Chris Kyle’s burial in Austin is the culmination of an event that began Tuesday morning in the small Dallas suburb of Midlothian.

Surrounded by Patriot Guard Riders and police officers, the funeral procession for the most lethal sniper in American history began at 9 a.m.

Rain drizzled down on the thousands of people lining the roads to show their support and on the white hearse carrying Kyle's body. It was fitting weather for a former Navy SEAL, who spent a decade entrenched in warfare.

As the motorcade passed through Waxahachie, TX on I-35, several local fire departments joined together to raise a 25-foot long American flag.

Just before noon, as the motorcade reached Austin, sunlight broke through the morning clouds.

Central Texans waved flags and saluted as Kyle's procession exited I-35 and headed towards 7th Street, where his wife, Taya, and his two young children finished their 200-mile journey at Kyle's final resting place: Texas State Cemetery.

At 1 p.m. his private funeral commenced with a gun salute and military flyover. Then, at 2:30 p.m. Chris Kyle was lowered into the ground, buried near his fellow Texas Navy Seals.
