Weekday Warrior: A week with lots of watching
While we’ve been in the 90s and above for what seems like months already, there’s one thing to be thankful for — we’re not on track to undertake another can’t-leave-the-house hellfire that was the summer of 2011. So while you’re celebrating the lack of 100+ temps, there’s more than enough to keep you going through the week. Here’s our weekly guide to keep you busy during the days that don’t start with S.
Monday, June 18
Movie For Schella @ Alamo Drafthouse Lake Creek
Join Jeremy and Ashley Self for a special screening of the movie Warrior, hosted by Mission 823 and featuring a special “Best of Alamo” menu and a silent auction. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Self family adoption.
Lonelyland with Bob Schneider @ The Saxon Pub
Sure, this town is overflowing with opportunities to catch this local troubadour, but his Monday night residencies are a summertime staple. If you’d prefer to catch him from the comfort of your own couch, worry not — his shows are also webcast via his website.
Tuesday, June 19
The music of Brooklynites Here We Go Magic finds front man Luke Temple away from his singer-songwriter beginnings, and into indie rock territory in a remarkably catchy way. Check them out as they perform songs from their catalogue, including their most recent release, 2010’s Pigeons.
Girlie Night: 10 Things I Hate About You @ Alamo Ritz
Heath Ledger may have left us too soon, but there’s no denying that he was perhaps at his charming bad boy best in this teenage take on the Shakespearean classic, The Taming of the Shrew. Plus, Allison Janney shines as a wannabe romance novelist guidance counselor who’s completely happy, as long as you let her get back to Reginald’s quivering member.
Wednesday, June 20
Paramount Summer Classic Film Series: The Birds
This Hitchcock classic may sour you on the avian persuasion forever, but it’s sure made for some inspired Halloween costumes over the years. Plus, watching Tippi Hedren scatter from vicious fowl is a sight to behold. This film is part of a double feature, so one ticket gets you admission to both screenings.
The Long Center Presents: One Man Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Writer/performer Charles Ross (of the now-infamous “One Man Star Wars Trilogy” offers his spin on the J.R. Tolkien trilogy, playing each inhabitant of Middle Earth and beyond, creating all the sound effects and fighting on both sides of the battlefield.

Let us all remember that before she became dance Goddess, extraordinaire, Robyn was a top 40 pop songstress that brought us the inimitably catchy “Show Me Love.” Celebrate her transformation with this show that’s sure to get the hipster gals going.
A Night with Lizz Winstead @ The Palm Door
Co-creator of The Daily Show and Air America Radio heads to The Palm Door for a special engagement benefitting Planned Parenthood. In addition to a reading and performance, she will also be signing copies of her book Lizz Free or Die, courtesy of Bookpeople.

Mohawk Presents: Johnathan Richman
There’s a likelihood that many of Austin’s residents won’t immediately recognize Johnathan Richman’s name, but anyone who’s seen the Farrelly Brothers’ classic There’s Something About Mary will remember him as the occasionally-stalking troubadour narrating Ted’s awkward laments. The founder of 70’s punk band The Modern Lovers heads to Mohawk after more than 30 years of touring.
Alamo Drafthouse Presents: The Summer of 1982: The Thing @ Alamo Ritz
The Drafthouse’s celebration of the greatest summer of cinema continues with this shape-shifting classic, starring everyone’s favorite 80s action hero, Kurt Russell.
There you have it, folks. You can get your groove on with Robyn, see a movie for a good cause, and even oogle 80’s Kurt Russell all before you turn off that weekday alarm.
