Providing Relief
Sandra Bullock donates $1 million for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts
Hollywood star and part-time Austin resident Sandra Bullock is practically a one-woman disaster relief fund.
As the Gulf Coast, including the Houston area, struggles to recover from Hurricane Harvey, one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history, Bullock has donated $1 million to American Red Cross hurricane relief efforts.
“I’m just grateful I can do it,” Bullock, who owns a home in Austin, tells E! News in a statement. “We have to take care of one another.”
“There are no politics in eight feet of water,” Bullock adds. “There are human beings in eight feet of water.”
Red Cross spokeswoman Elizabeth Penniman calls Bullock’s donation “an incredible gift.”
According to Today.com, Bullock’s donations to the Red Cross following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, tsunamis in Indonesia and Japan, Hurricane Katrina, and Hurricane Harvey have totaled $5 million. She also contributed $1 million to Doctors Without Borders for earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.
In other Austin-related fundraising for Harvey recovery, Austin-based Whole Foods Market and its new owner, Amazon.com, will match cash donations made via Amazon — up to a total of $1 million — to Red Cross relief efforts.
Meanwhile, San Antonio-based H-E-B, the largest grocer in the Austin area, is donating $100,000 to Harvey relief efforts and has launched an in-store campaign to enable shoppers to add donations of $1, $3, or $5 to their grocery bills.
Additionally, a small coalition of Austin-based tech companies — including uShip, Box, Aceable, The Chive, Everfest, Invodo, and Boundless Network — organized a drive to collect nonperishable food, bottled water, batteries, and other items for the Houston Food Bank or the Red Cross.
Major Austin employers like Apple, Facebook, and Google also have kicked off Harvey relief campaigns.
Other celebrities have rallied to raise funds for relief efforts. Comedian Kevin Hart has launched a fundraising campaign and is calling for other celebrities to match his $25,000 donation to the American Red Cross; Kim Kardashian West and family will donate $500,000 to the Red Cross and Salvation Army; Texans' star J.J. Watt's campaign has raised almost $6 million.
