The Encyclopedia Show Season Five Premiere: Candy!
Much like Season Five of AMC’s critical darling Breaking Bad, The Encyclopedia Show promises the right blend of entertainment and a healthy dose of knowledge.
To kicks things off, the off-kilter and often brilliant themed variety show will explore something that’s just as addictive as anything you can find on the streets of Albuquerque. That’s right – you’ll learn everything you could ever want to know about candy.
Friday, September 13 – Saturday, September 14
Wooldridge Square Park Reopening Celebration
After a year of work, the city's Parks and Recreation Department is ready to show off the improved lawn, trees and historic bandstand at Wooldridge Square. They'll celebrate for two days, starting with a Friday morning ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Take the family to dine at food trailers, participate in activities such as Tai Chi Ch’uan and listen to live music from Dale Watson on Friday and the Austin Symphony Big Band on Saturday. The weather’s cooling off incrementally, so this could also be the perfect chance to get a little bit of sun without the heatstroke.
Friday, September 13 – Sunday, September 15
Ballet Austin Presents: A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Shakespeare’s plays are constantly being reinterpreted. This weekend, Ballet Austin promises an especially inventive take on the bard’s stylized language.
Artistic Director Stephen Mills brings to the dance stage one of Shakespeare’s preeminent comedies, complete with its iconic characters, from the regal King and Queen of the Fairies to the comical Bottom, an audience favorite.
Saturday, September 14 – Sunday, September 15
School of Rock Austin: A Tribute to Dave Grohl and Judas Priest
The School of Rock's mission is to take bright and talented young people and transform them into the next generation of rock ‘n’ roll gods. But the future of rock must first pay tribute to the legends of the past.
The school’s recent summer performance program class will sing the praises of Judas Priest, the British heavy metal band that made S&M leather vogue, and Dave Grohl, the musician who helped usher in the era of grunge. Saturday begins with the Judas Priest tribute, followed by a performance of Grohl’s work with Nirvana and the Foo Fighters; the order is flipped on Sunday. No matter what night you attend, get ready to witness your very own headbanger’s ball.
Sunday, September 15
Modern Tintypes with AIGA Austin
The Austin chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts will host a Sunday brunch, complete with Bloody Mary bar, while offering an opportunity to learn more about the art and science behind making photography by hand.
The husband-and-wife team behind Lumiere Tintype, Loren Doyen and Adrian Whipp, create haunting, beautiful work. You should never pass up a chance to see them in action while enjoying a delicious brunch.
