Austin Fire Department receives compassion award from PETA

KVUE — The Austin Fire Department is getting praise from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). On Tuesday morning PETA presented firefighter David Dickerson and his crew with the Compassionate Fire Department Award.
In July, Dickerson and his crew rescued and resuscitated a dog from an apartment fire on Poquito Street in East Austin. Firefighters used a specially designed oxygen mask to revive the dog suffering from smoke inhalation. That fire displaced eight people and caused about $45,000 in damages.
