Put your paws up: Celebrate LGBTQ Expression at the revamped Austin PrideFestival
Whether you’re gay, straight or bi, Austin Pride is an LGBTQ-friendly festival that encourages all Austinites to participate. Pride 2012, which will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, features new events like the Rainbow Run 5K and the traditional Pride events like an evening parade and Pride Festival. Here's a breakdown of the schedule, whether you're a newcomer or longtime participant.
Rainbow Run
Rainbow Run is a 5K “fun run” starting at the intersection of Riverside River and South First St. and continuing to the 4th Street Warehouse District. The run is completed with organizers runners receiving rainbow powder, which is encouraged to cover their bodies in color. Registration is $25 and the run starts at 9:00 a.m.
Pride Fest
Following the run, the Pride Festival will begin at 11:00 a.m. featuring performers on two different stages at Fiesta Gardens. Participants will also be able to scour festival vendor tables and buy food at the gardens. Notable performers include Chad Michaels at 1:20 p.m. and Manila Luzon at 3:05 p.m. who you might also recognize from Ru Paul's Drag Race.
Also performing will be popular Austin burlesque dancer, Ginger Snaps around 3:45 p.m. and the ever-loved Peaches at 4:30 p.m. Pride Festival tickets are $25 and $125 for an all-access pass. The festival runs from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Pride Parade
To pump up for the Pride Parade, a pre-parade dance party will be held outside the Paramount Theatre on Congress, featuring DJ C-Rail. At 8:00 p.m. the carnival will kick start at 11th and San Jacinto. The procession will run on Congress Ave. moving away from the Capital, ending its route around 4th street.
Any way you slice it, Pride will bring a welcomed colorful celebration to the Austin community.
