A new chapter
Popular Austin shopping destination set to get Amazon Books store
On the heels of Amazon’s acquisition of locally based Whole Food Market and amid the ferocious race among Austin and many other North American cities to host Amazon’s second headquarters, the retail titan is writing another chapter in its Central Texas presence: The Amazon Books chain is gearing up to open a store in North Austin.
According to recently posted signage, the first Amazon Books location in Austin — and in all of Texas — is set to debut in early 2018 at Domain Northside. Amazon recently published a job posting in search of a manager for the store. In a no-duh declaration, the ad says candidates for the position “must love books and devices.”
The Austin store will be across the street from Domain Northside's Flower Child restaurant and a short walk from Whole Foods’ Domain Northside location. Amazon has a corporate office at the Domain.
The Amazon Books retail chain has 11 shops; they’re in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Oregon, and Washington. Two more stores are set to open soon in California. Media reports indicate an Amazon Books store ranges in size from roughly 4,000 to 10,000 square feet.
Amazon Books describes the retail chain as a “physical extension” of Amazon.com, which initially launched as a bookseller. The bookstore chain says it “integrates the benefits of offline and online shopping to help you find books and devices you’ll love.”
The stores choose books to sell based on Amazon.com customer ratings, preorders, sales, popularity on Goodreads, and assessments from its own “curators.”
“We place books face-out on the shelves, so each can communicate its own essence,” Amazon Books says on its website.
The first Amazon Books store opened in 2015 in Seattle, where Amazon is based.
